The Plant Based- "Jedi Mind Shake"

Inspired by a hero of mine, fitness enthusiast, personal trainer and all around genius, Ben Greenfield, I dove into the "smoothie game" a few years back. After tinkering with some really weird ingredients that ranged from organic dinosaur kale to functional mushrooms such  as chaga and lion's mane, I've had my fair share of foul-tasting green guck. I quickly settled on a recipe that is not only totally digestible, packed with healthy fats, fiber, protein and day's worth of micro-nutrients, but taste's like coconuty, chocolatey heaven.

Every morning between 5 and 5:30 AM, with sleepy eyes and ice cold water dripping from my body, I brush through the kitchen and prepare my lunch. I rarely eat breakfast and try to honor an eating window of 12 noon to 8pm. Most of the time, I break my fast with a high fat, plant based, big-ass green smoothie I've nicknamed "The Jedi-Mind Shake." Bear with me, cheesy name aside, this thing is pretty serious (and delicious).

On a regular day, my daily smoothie will include the following;

  • One-half or a Whole Avocado
  • A Handful of Organic Greens (Kale, Spinach, Swiss Chard, Arugala, Bok Choi) or 1 Scoop Greens Powder
  • Liquid- Bone Broth (non-vegan), Coconut Milk or Water
  • Plant Based Protein Powder (Vanilla)
  • Juice of 1/4 a Lemon
  • A tablespoon of MCT oil
  • A teaspoon of collagen protein (non-vegan)
  • English Toffee or Dark Chocolate Stevia- this is important, without this added sweetener my shake will taste like a forest
  • A tablespoon of Fulvic Acid (Onnit Fulvic Minerals)- an important naturally occurring organic acid that can be difficult to obtain from a normal diet
  • A homemade and jarred blend of Raw and Organic Cacao, Turmeric, Ginger, Ceylon Cinnamon, Moringa, Maca, and Chia Seeds

After blending all the ingredients, I like to add some crunchy texture so I'll reach for the following

  • Unsweetened Coconut Chips
  • Spirulina and Chlorella Tablets
  • Raw Cacao Nibs
  • Macadamia Nuts
  • Raw Almonds
  • Raw Cashews

If I can get this just right, I feel like Superman for the next 24 hours- easy. The flavored stevia gives the smoothie an unbelievable taste and the crunchy goodness of the coconuts, cacao and/or nuts makes the experience totally unique. The best part is, is that omitting or adding to this unique recipe is totally cool! I change mine up from time to time and will include things like carrots, beets, blueberries, green bananas, or strawberries. If you're into the smoothie game and have your own recipe, sound off! I'd love to hear about it! Bonus points if you have a name for it that's as cheezy as mine ; )
